A new chapter - renovating my own home
As an interior designer, I’ve had the privilege of transforming many homes for clients, weaving together their aspirations and needs into spaces that tell their stories. Now, I’m embarking on a journey that’s as thrilling as it is daunting: renovating my own house. This project is not just a personal milestone but also an opportunity to channel my professional expertise into a deeply personal canvas.
Starting with the Architect’s Brief
At the moment, I’m immersed in drafting the architect’s brief—a crucial document that will guide the entire project. It’s an exercise in self-reflection, requiring my husband and me to articulate what we truly want from this renovation. From functional needs to aesthetic aspirations, every detail matters.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) offers an excellent resource on how to find and work with an architect, which I’ve found incredibly helpful as I refine my vision. You can explore their guidance here. Their advice underscores the importance of clear communication and collaboration in bringing a project to life.
1. Defining Functional Needs
For me, functionality is the cornerstone of good design. This house must work for our family’s daily rhythms while accommodating future needs. Key considerations include:
Flexible Spaces: Rooms that can adapt as our needs evolve. Our children are currently two and five, but by the time the work is complete, they will likely be four and six. We want the house to work brilliantly now and as time passes—when they are teenagers and beyond.
Storage Solutions: Clever, integrated storage to maintain a sense of order and calm. Bespoke joinery can be costly, so I’ll need to prioritise certain areas—the kitchen, pantry, boot room, and snug.
Sustainability: Sustainability is at the heart of this project. From energy-efficient systems to sustainable building materials, every decision will prioritise reducing environmental impact.
2. Aesthetic Vision
I envision a home that balances elegance with warmth, where every corner tells a story. My husband prefers a more neutral palette, whereas I love colour, so we’ll need to find a middle ground. What is clear, however, is that art will take centre stage, and the natural environment surrounding the house will play a significant role in shaping the design. One thing we do agree on is:
A Sense of Spaciousness: While I’m not a fan of very large open-plan layouts, I want the spaces to feel open and connected, with thoughtful transitions between rooms that maintain a sense of intimacy.
3. Spatial Planning
Efficient spatial planning is essential to making the most of the house’s footprint. I’m exploring:
Natural Light: Maximising windows and openings to bring in as much daylight as possible.
Outdoor Connection: Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces with thoughtful landscaping and french doors.
4. Facade and Concept Design
The exterior of the house is just as important as the interior. Living in a village, I want the facade to reflect a farmhouse style that feels authentic and rooted in its surroundings. Initial ideas include:
Farmhouse Aesthetic: A timeless, relaxed and practical style that connects to nature.
Sustainable Materials: Using reclaimed or locally sourced materials wherever possible.
Welcoming Entrance: A front door and entryway that set the tone for what lies within.
5. Looking Ahead
This project is ambitious, and there’s no denying the challenges it presents. However, it’s also an exciting opportunity to create a home that reflects our values and lifestyle. Over the coming months, I’ll be refining the architect’s brief and beginning the process of assembling a talented team to bring the vision to life. It’s a journey that will require patience and flexibility, but one that I hope will result in a home that feels both deeply personal and beautifully functional.
For anyone considering a renovation, I’d emphasise the importance of thorough planning and a clear vision. Taking the time to get it right at the start can make all the difference in achieving a home that truly works for you.
